Highway Horses
She loves the way he drives, so recklessly, like he is not afraid to die, and he loves the way she hangs her head out the window dreaming about flying. Two ways of not being afraid of the end, driving and dreaming, both watched from a motel parking lot, highway horses and billboard crosses, horsepower and roadside Jesus in one couplet.
Then the fearlessness turns inward. He dives right into her like he is not afraid to cry, and she falls asleep with her eyes open so he is the last thing she sees each night. I love you runs over and over against the highway until the two are the same sentence, nowhere to go, but at least going together.
