Western Nights
The first turn off the main road. The narrator falls for a dangerous man and mistakes his danger for shelter, promising devotion through the trouble she can already see coming toward them both.
The song is tender and doomed in equal measure, love pledged with eyes open. It is where the album leaves the inherited dread of home for a chosen one, and where the road out first starts to look like a road down.
