Hard Times

The album’s most difficult look backward, at a childhood shaped by a father’s abuse. It is sung not with fury but with a numb, unnerving tenderness, the voice of someone narrating a wound so old it has stopped bleeding.

That flatness is the horror of it. The song refuses easy blame and easy catharsis alike, and in withholding both it says more about what was taken than any louder telling could.
